Not all the photographs in this book are related to trips. Many are. And among those, perhaps the most surprising aspect is how the world has changed in half a century. One used to travel to the same places: The Alhambra, Buckingham Palace, Saint Peter's Basilica, Palatine Hill, the Statue of Liberty, Kyoto Gardens,Acapulco, Mitla, Capri. And yet it's as though it were an unknown dimension; another planet where the tourist sites are missing precisely that which, on our planet, makes them so brutally unfathomable: tourists. These photographs show such a complete emptiness that, to our eyes accustomed to crowds, the wonders of the world become scenic landscapes, as though they were movie sets rather than real places. It would almost seem likely, from behind the columns of the Roman Forum, for Kirk Douglas to appear dressed as Spartacus. To us, "place of interest" is synonymous with hordes. The possibility of travelling leisurely, without being crushed, is completely foreign to us. Sixty years ago, taking the typical photograph, as all our grandparents did, of the pigeons in Saint Mark's Square, was absolutely possible—there were more pigeons than people. You could go to Teotihuacán and be the only ones in the "City of the Gods"—nowadays even the top of the Pyramid of the Sun is packed with people selling soft drinks. The lack of people therefore perplexes us. What world is this? Or rather, what movie? Perhaps this sense of cinematographic artificiality is even more accentuated due to the specific tonality of the images: the classic "Technicolor" that in the nineteen fifties, or around then, only slides could offer. We must remember that for a long time, slides were the color photographic medium most accessible to enthusiasts, who otherwise had to be content with the traditional use of black and white photography. It is interesting to also realize that, due to their nature, slides necessarily require a projector to "enlarge" them. Therefore, until well into the nineteen seventies, color photography involved a sort of "developing" ritual that turned the access to images into quite an event. Trips then took on an irresistible aura of cinematographic images: mythical, that is. Picture the whole family gathered around the projector, ready to relive the star moments of the trip—popcorn in hand. The important thing, once again, is not travelling but having travelled.
